And you thought religious schisms could get nasty!

Among the Fanfic community things can get pretty nasty too.

The Case of the Fractured Fandom

But then in 2014, just after Season 3 of the show aired, a user posted a very elaborate fan theory online. When I say very elaborate, I mean it was tens of thousands of words of high-minded literary analysis that began by interpreting a BBC report on queer representation and then went on to closely read every episode of Sherlock, the shot composition, the score, the colors, the lighting, the dialogue, the references, the letters in the character’s names, all with a helping of string theory.

The idea all this analysis led to was that John Watson and Sherlock Holmes were not only characters with gay subtext who should be together, they were gay characters who were going to get together in the show. Johnlock was going to happen, for real, most likely in the then-upcoming Season 4.

This became known as the Johnlock conspiracy: TJLC for short. Much of the theory is based on close textual analysis, the kind an English teacher would love. But TJLC wasn’t based only on close readings of the show. You have to understand, Sherlock and John could only be getting together if the creators were lying to viewers—because the creators said, over and over, no way, it’s not going to happen. Now, to be fair, the creators did often lie. Steven Moffat, who was also the showrunner for Doctor Who, is especially well-known for misleading fans and the press about specific plot points in the shows he makes, both in interviews and at panels at fan conventions. But when it came to questions about Johnlock as a romantic pairing, the showrunners became particularly unequivocal.

But among the Johnlock shippers there are further schisms: the "Toplocks" and the "Bottomlocks." I leave it to you to deduce the meaning therefrom, but at a certain "Con" there was a discussion panel where emotions got quite frayed when a panelist who was a Toplock shipper was confronted by Bottomlocks who accused her of being a terrible person for such heresy.

It may be "nasty" but they aren't hurting anybody.

All in all, having no life is a good way to stay out of trouble. :)

Sexual Fanfic is something I just don't get. I rarely care who is ACTUALLY boning whom in a book, movie or show. Who SHOULD be boning whom occupies exactly none of my headspace. I get non-sexual fanfic. No matter what book, movie or show you happen to like, you only get a finite amount of it officially. If you are a fan of Star Wars, for instance, you get about two hours of it a year. If you want more, fanfic is a way to get more (note I did not say a GOOD way: I find most fanfic to be so badly written as to be unreadable. But it is a way that exists)

Yet I see fans obsessing over it, spending lots of time thinking about and talking about it, etc. Mostly a female thing, I have noticed and I suspect its kind of the reason they like romance novels. I would bet "Romance Novel Fan" and "Sexual Fanfic Readers" are a Venn Diagram with a hell of a lot of overlap.

I actually completely understand, but I'm enjoying the recursion opportunity. You only care a little about the made up people in made up stories boning, but there's room to care even less about made up stories of the made up stories.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

やあ(^O^)

That's what this podcast is about. A sort of deep dive into the rabbit hole for people who aren't really familiar with this world.

Wasn't there a scene where the girl finds out the other girl is a fan of the same anime. So they are going to be great friends!

Until the other girl says which "ship" she supports and it's the wrong one. Then it's like "Infidel!!!"

Piffle.
Online Etymological Dictionary wrote:fan (n.2)

"devotee," 1889, American English, originally of baseball enthusiasts, probably a shortening of fanatic, but it may be influenced by the fancy, a collective term for followers of a certain hobby or sport (especially boxing); see fancy (n.). There is an isolated use from 1682, but the modern word likely is a late 19c. formation. Fan mail attested from 1920, in a Hollywood context; Fan club attested by 1930.
Before the close of the republic, an enthusiastic partisan of one of the factions in the chariot races flung himself upon the pile on which the body of a favourite coachman was consumed, and perished in the flames. [Lecky, "European Morals"]

Way to go, fan(atic)s.

Yes.

Have not been able to find the scene undubbed where the two start snubbing one another over the X issue.

I will ask Gram's Mom if he has it in his BL collection.

Because he likes BL.

Not . . .
