I wonder if management has taken steps to prevent surreptitious video recording at today's self criticism sessions.

Starbucks is a private company so they can do whatever they want. But, in my opinion, this whole "Shut down every store in America to teach our employees not to be racist!" event is a dumb business move. Not only are they losing revenue for a futile gesture of self-criticism, while they're busy teaching their employees that it's "racist" to ask someone sitting in a coffee shop to actually order coffee, they're giving their regular customers a day off to go out and try the competition.

The part in yellow is what I find most amusing.

My opinion doesn't count, however, since I am not a Starbucks customer (and never have been, never will be).

That.

Refusing to serve squatters is not "racist."

I had no sympathy for the idiots who were arrested when they refused to leave for not buying anything. It is, in a way, racism to assume it was anything more than serving customers and not squatters.

On my way to work this morning I stopped at Starbucks for a piss without buying anything (as usual).

The only thing that has changed in the past few weeks is my becoming aware that this was a form of White Privilege TM, and that as of yesterday it is that no more.

So everything is now OK all around and no complaints.

Ditto, so I have to ask (quick googling showed nothing): are all their coffees served in plastic cups?

People on the news pointed out, "im a size 2 white chick and if i go into starbucks slumming in yoga pants, nobody asks to me to leave for not buying".

The real issue is, it was apparent that loitering rules were not enforced equally.

Starbucks had a real shitstorm fly into them and from a PR standpoint, they are handling it well.

They will eventually let stores decide loitering rules on their own probably, they just have to keep their heads down a while and carry on this kabuki.

Whatever happened in that coffee shop does not make sense as a national issue.

This.

But nowadays, every incident in any place in America that might possibly be an example of racial bias becomes a national issue if somebody videos it with their phone.

As corplinx noted, I don't think this issue was with the rules, but with haphazard or arbitrary enforcement of the rules against some people but not against others.

Media bias (I don't mean political bias but the bias towards the sensational and the controversial) gives people a distorted view of reality. If the media spends a disproportionate amount of time covering shark attacks, even though shark attacks are statistically quite rare, it will take up a disproportionate amount of our mind-space, whereas more common risks are ignored because they don't make for interesting news stories. So a handful of stories about racial bias incidents, if they get a disproportionate amount of coverage, can feed the narrative that this sort of thing is very commonplace.

Starbucks has become a comical right wing villain for all sorts of silly reasons. Holiday cups. Funding whatever. And now telling employees that because they were unequally enforcing loitering rules, they ruined it for everybody and now the company has to let everyone loiter for a while until the shitstorm ends. Businesses have to survive and you have to prevent a Jesse Jackson Shakedown any way you can.

They will eventually go back to "no loitering", because the average starbucks customer who drinks their coffee inside the store wants to see the Hobos sitting on the other side of the window from them.

But will they go back to "no loitering for some"?

Starbucks makes a poor left-wing icon, anyway. Most of the really lefty people I know consider it fully evil. In their opinion it is to coffee shops what Wal-Mart is to grocery stores, except more elitist (higher priced).

Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Update: Starbucks strategy going forward.

Starbucks Pumps the Brakes in Its Home Market
Bloomberg
With Schultz exiting, it’s now up to CEO Kevin Johnson to decide where to slow versus grow.

... Starbucks also plans to close about 150 company-operated stores in densely penetrated U.S. markets next fiscal year, three times the number it historically shuts down annually ...

... a renewed focus on rural and suburban areas—not over-caffeinated urban neighborhoods where locals already joke that the next Starbucks will open inside an existing store. ...
Closing in "urban neighborhoods". I'd love to see a map.

I wonder how that whole "Actually asking people to buy coffee in a a coffee shop is 'racist'" restroom policy is working out.

More "non-racist" access for everyone, I'm sure.

Abdul's the one who often uses the restroom at Starbucks. Have you noticed any change?

I rarely go to Starbucks myself but the other day I was out at a museum in Ueno with my wife and we stopped at Starbucks on the way back to the train station just because it was convenient. I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich that was actually pretty good and a regular coffee. My wife ordered tea and a sandwich. But this is Japan so it's probably different over here.
