There's something pathetic about that. I can understand it with really old people: all their friends are dead or nearly so, the young ones shun the old bores, so a dog makes for a "presence".
Not very different from all the people who have the TV open all day long. (You can see it on lots of YT videos where there's an active screen in the background, completely unrelated to what's going on.)

OK, I don't like dogs, nor television… :|
