Karl's 200th birthday

Post by Anaxagoras » Sun May 06, 2018 2:51 am

The 5 most ridiculously capitalist souvenirs for sale at Karl Marx’s 200th birthday party

Weren't the souvenirs made in a worker-owner cooperative? :notsure:
TRIER, Germany — Karl Marx would have turned 200 on Saturday, and his German hometown marked the occasion with a citywide festival that featured speeches, music and the unveiling of a controversial Chinese-funded statue.

It also featured lots and lots of Marx-themed souvenirs.

At Trier Souvenir, the shop around the corner from the newly dedicated statue, entire shelves were dedicated to Marx memorabilia. And items were selling fast, the register beeping at a breakneck clip as tourists snapped up mementos of their visit.

What would the man who called for the violent overthrow of the capitalist system via a revolution of the proletariat have made of his life being remembered through useless tchotchkes? It’s best not to ask.

But herewith, five of our favorites:

Marx champagne

To celebrate that special occasion — perhaps the workers of the world uniting? — there’s Marx-themed bubbly.

The Marx rubber ducky

The bright-orange bill really accentuates Marx’s signature wild mane of hair and beard. You, too, can bathe with your very own (rubber) edition of "Das Kapital."

The Marx piggy bank

Class struggle doesn’t pay like it used to. Stash your savings here.

The Marx mug

Coffee drinkers of the world, unite!

The Marx traffic light

Trier, where the philosopher was raised until 17, really does have a traffic light featuring Marx’s likeness. You can get the traffic-light Marx on a bag.
There's also an 18-foot bronze statue of Marx, paid for by the Chinese.
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.
William Shakespeare

This stuff will be worth a lot of money when he's 300! I'm sure he'd approve!
"It is not I who is mad! It is I who is crazy!" -- Ren Hoek

"[... it seems most strange that... ] the Creator of Heaven and Earth resorted to the womb of a certain Jewish lady, grew there for nine months and was born as an infant, and afterwards grew up and was betrayed into the hands of his enemies who sentenced him to death and executed him, and that afterwards... he came to life and returned to his original place. The mind of a Jew, or any other person, simply cannot tolerate these assertions. If you have listened all your life to the priests who have filled your brain and the marrow of your bones with this doctrine, and it has settled into you because of that accustomed habit. [I would argue that if you were hearing these ideas for the first time, now, as a grown adult], you would never have accepted them." -- Rabbi Moses ben Nahman, defending the Talmud at the Disputation of Barcelona, July 1263.

"God is the supreme excuse for human adults to absolve themselves of any obligation to preserve natural resources for their own children during their lifetime." -- Gene Ray

Fun Fact: you have to pay a fee to visit Marx's grave.

Kinda looks like ZARDOZ
Some modern-day admirers of Marx who want to abolish private property are understandably upset that it’s not free to get in. “There are no depths of irony, or bad taste, to which capitalists won’t sink if they think they can make money out of it,” whined one 24-year-old Marxist to The Wall Street Journal. Instead of paying, he chose to peer over a fence at Marx’s imposing bust. (This is far from the most bitter reaction the grave has inspired: People have tried to blow it up, twice.)

He spawned an ideology that has killed over 100 million people and made life a living hell for hundreds of millions of others. Why is it socially acceptable to honor this fucktard? He should be demonized the way Hitler is by any sensible rationale.

Dear Karl,

Happy birthday! It's tempting to say that much has changed in the 200 years since your birth, but as I sit down to describe those changes, I must admit I am more struck by the similarities than the differences between your time and mine.

The big news is, of course, that the kings you fought so hard to unmask as charlatans no longer are divine. Well, there are a few monarchs who still claim tangential ties to a higher power, but most people have cottoned on to the fact that royal power is really just a combination of heredity and tenacity. And, unfortunately, your kings have been replaced by new ones who base their right to rule on an aristocracy of wealth.

Have you heard about the terrible wars of the 20th century? They were called World Wars, and that was no exaggeration. The first one, which involved said kings and their ambitions, killed as many as 40 million people. A second war began 20 years later because the first had never truly ended. It would kill twice as many people and produce a weapon so formidable it could wipe out the planet. In that war, man proved he could kill like a beast and a god. Ironically, your name was invoked in the slaughter.

Yes, Karl, after you died in 1883, people discovered your writings and some promptly misused them. There are statues of you in capitals around the globe where governments expounded "Marxism" to deprive people of the very freedoms you extolled. They reinterpreted your vision of "the free development of each" being "the condition for the free development of all" as the freedom to be equally miserable. Indeed, the repression and butchery accomplished in your name during the last century would horrify you.
Holy fuck this woman is delusional! There is no other way to implement Marxism except through a powerful, totalitarian state in which dissent is not allowed and brutally suppressed. There is no "right way" to implement Marxism, it all ends in misery, despair, and massive death.

Fuck this stupid author, fuck all the other Marxists. They are evil, despicable people.

These idiots are too stupid to learn even from an up close and personal look at the inevitable fruits of Marxism. After all, Bernie Sanders honeymooned in the USSR and learned nothing from it.

Challenging decades of mainstream academic thought, a group of Johns Hopkins University researchers released a report Tuesday indicating that the late Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin was only one great purge away from creating a communist utopia. “Our research demonstrates that if Stalin had shipped a mere 100,000 more people to Siberia, the whole communist experiment would have worked out perfectly,” said historian and report co-author Franklin Morrison, adding that all of the USSR’s corruption, hunger, and disease would have disappeared overnight if Stalin had simply been able to let a few million more Ukrainians starve to death. “It’s a shame, because in 1953 the Soviet Union was really on the precipice of becoming a perpetual workers’ paradise devoid of all poverty and want. Unfortunately, Stalin passed away before he could round up just one last group of intellectuals and make them dig their own mass graves.”

Hmm, I dunno. He almost won the Democratic Party nomination. And he would have done it too if not for those meddling Clintons...although we could also blame Commie Jill Stein.

Perhaps this should be in the Venezuela thread, but, it has such a good history lesson in the practical application of Marxist ideas I couldn't resist.

Venezuela's Woes Worsen
have previously covered Venezuela's worsening economic situation, particularly in relation to its oil industry. More than a decade ago, after the late Hugo Chavez expropriated the assets of oil companies like ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips (my employer at that time), I warned:
It won’t take too long before everything is nationalized, and Chavez has no more coffers to plunder and then must count on the revenue from the industries he has already plundered. Then, to his chagrin he finds that they aren’t producing like they used to, because he hasn’t invested in the infrastructure.
When Chavez made his grab for these assets in 2007, the Venezuelan state-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA) fancifully announced that it would raise oil production to 5.8 million BPD by 2012. Instead, by 2012 Venezuela's oil production had fallen by nearly 20% from its 2007 level.

Since then, oil production there has continued to fall. Venezuelan oil production is currently estimated at 1.5 million BPD, which is less than half the 3.2 million BPD production level of 2007. This drop in production was entirely predictable given the plundering of the oil industry there, even though on paper Venezuela holds the world's largest proved oil reserves.(Related: Venezuela’s Oil Reserves Are Probably Vastly Overstated).

But matters are only getting worse.
Yes a success, a flaming success.
