Of course he can. But thank goodness he doesn't have to. 8)

Mr. Kim’s best option to boost the North Korean economy is to diversify its partnerships and open up to the West and Japan.

Moving the country closer to the United States and further from China is also sound strategy from a security point of view. China may not openly threaten North Korea’s independence, but its ambition to better control its near abroad — in Southeast Asia, around the South China Sea, through its One Belt, One Road initiative — can only breed serious suspicions in Pyongyang. (There seems to have been no talk of reactivating the old Sino-North Korean alliance or the two countries’ long-forgotten mutual defense treaty.)

If she and Obama had stopped his nuclear program then Trump wouldn't have been able to make a deal to dismantle it. So you see this is all thanks to Hillary.

It's a good of course. Trump's tweet about it is somewhat misleading: two of the three were taken prisoner last year, when Trump was president.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/obama ... e-release/

There were other prisoners released during Obama's administration: Kenneth Bae, Matthew Todd Miller, Laura Ling and Euna Lee. So securing the release of American prisoners is not something Trump was the first to do. They get taken from time to time, and when needed as bargaining chips, released. Releasing them now is all part of the political bargaining. There will be more taken later, if it suits their purposes. There's always a few people dumb enough to travel there.

That's a fair point. There's nothing here new to get excited about.

Disagree. There are times when 1+1=3. Here are the facts:
  1. 1-Trump is the most hated by the elites (media, entertainment basically everyone who is not a deplorable) of anyone in history
    2-Failure is assumed.
3-fat boy has done some unprecedented things (visited the south, made noised about giving up nukes etc)
4-he released hostages coincident with all the other stuff going on. This is what makes the release "important".
5-fat boy understands theater. Orange man understands theater. Like two expert skaters, they don't have to have practiced to put on a world class show the first time they meet. ie they know what the fuck they are doing
6-fat boy knows that if we attack he is toast
7-fat boy knows that we dont really give a shit about Seoul.
8-fat boy well knows point #1, fat boy and orange man are self aware enough to know #5
For these reasons, what would ,under other circumstances be a ho hum might signify far more.
Then again this is the interwebs and I have no idea what I am talking about.

We'll see. Releasing the hostages is just an appetizer for the main course.

My hope, perhaps a naive hope, is that Kim has decided to do something truly bold and plot a new course for his country, but that still remains to be seen. The other possibility is that this is just North Korea doing the same Jekyl and Hyde routine that it has done in the past.

Follow this line of thought:

Kim can only do it with Trump as only Nixon could have opened up China.

That is some deep insightful shit there.

Trump and Kim sign 'comprehensive' document to end summit
President Trump on Tuesday signed what he called a “pretty comprehensive” document alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, capping off their historic summit in Singapore.

Trump and Kim sat beside one another at a large wooden table in front of a bank of U.S. and North Korean flags to endorse the document, the specific contents of which remain unknown.

“I think both sides are going to be impressed with the result,” Trump told reporters. “We’re going to take care of a very big and very dangerous problem for the world.”

Trump said more information would come out “in just a little while.”

He added he would “absolutely” invite Kim to the White House to continue their talks.

Kim called the document “historic” and said it would lead to a new era in the U.S.-North Korea relationship.

What do you guys think? Is it real? Will it last?

I hope so. I truly do. Maybe even Rodman as nutty as he is played some role in helping this day to come.

But there have been efforts to be friendly in the past that ultimately failed. The so-called "Sunshine Policy" for example.

I don't expect every problem to be instantly solved with one summit, but it could be an important inflection point.

But I thought the new york times said this summit was off? that trumps tweets had doomed it. that all the posturing beforehand was more than posturing.

I hope it leads to us being able to reduce our headcount in southeast asia at some point in my lifetime.

We spend a lot to keep up the status quo.
