The records aren't kept by the government. If a gun is found at a crime scene they go to the manufacturer with the serial number. The manufacturer tells them which FFL the gun was sold to. The FFL tells them who bought the gun.

Now, if the person who bought the gun sold it as a private sale there is a dead end.

The issue is that there is no way to cross reference FFL sales, that is to say if a dealer sells to another dealer one is faced with a mound of paper.

When you see a push to automate the Bound Book and keep the records centralized then confiscation is eesy peesy. That event is the bellwether.

Texas mother shoots man trying to steal car with children inside

Don't mess with Texas mothers.

A mother in Texas shot a carjacker who was stealing her vehicle while her two young children were inside, police say.

The woman jumped back into her SUV after the suspect got into the driver's seat at a Dallas petrol station on Wednesday night, according to police.

"Petrol station"? Well, it's the Beeb.

Police say she grabbed her gun and shot the carjacker in the face when he refused to stop, causing him to crash.

The woman's sons - aged two and four - were not hurt in the incident.

The alleged thief's condition is unknown, but the woman said she has a message for him.
She had gone into the petrol station's convenience store when an employee alerted her that a man was entering her SUV.

She told local media she jumped into the back seat and told the man - later identified by police as 36-year-old Ricky Wright - to stop driving.

After he refused, she reached into the glove compartment to retrieve a handgun, and fired one shot at his face.
"I proceeded to jump in my backseat and told the gentleman to stop, to get out the car", she told KDFW-News. "He would not get out of the car."

"He turned around and looked at me. I reached over the arm rest to get to my glove compartment and that's when I fired at him."

She added: "I should have just emptied the whole clip but I didn't.

"I hope that woke him up."

Police say the man then crashed the car into a lamp pole. He was arrested and taken to hospital.

Police say the woman was questioned at the scene and released.

She is unlikely to face any charges, authorities add.

I am surprised you all FAIL'd to recognize this case:

Arizona woman, 92, shoots 72-year-old son to death

A 92-year-old woman shot and killed her 72-year-old son because he wanted to put her in an assisted living facility, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. In what MCSO described as a "bizarre turn of events," Anna Mae Blessing is facing one charge each of first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping, reports CBS Phoenix affiliate KPHO-TV.

Deputies were called out to Fountain Hills about 10 a.m. Monday.

Blessing had been living with her son, Thomas Blessing, and his girlfriend in the girlfriend's condo. They moved her in about six months ago from out of state.

"According to statements provided by suspect Blessing and received by the detectives, she had been contemplating for several days her son's intentions to place her in an assisted living facility," explained a news release from MCSO. "Blessing retrieved two pistols and concealed them in the pockets of her robe, then confronted her son in his bedroom."

MCSO said she shot her son twice before turning the gun on his 57-year-old girlfriend.

While struggling with that woman, whose name has not been released, Blessing lost her grip on the gun. But she still had the second one.

"Blessing retrieved the second handgun and attempted to point it at the girlfriend, who knocked it from Blessing's possession," according to MCSO.

The girlfriend called 911. When deputies arrived, they ordered Blessing to come outside but were met with silence. They found her sitting in her reclining chair, her son deceased in a bedroom.

"As the suspect was being escorted from the residence, she made a spontaneous statement to the effect of 'You took my life, so I'm taking yours,"' court documents read."

It was later determined during an interview with the suspect that she believed her life was being taken as a result of her son and his girlfriend attempting to place her into an assisted living facility, police said.

According to the probable cause for arrest statement, Blessing "intended to kill herself, however she didn't possess any additional firearms."

In speaking with Blessing, investigators learned that she had owned the two guns -- a revolver and a .25 caliber pistol -- since the 1970s. The first, she said, she bought at a gun store; the second was given to her by her husband before he died. She also told deputies the last time she fired either of the weapons was in the '70s.

The suspect stated she stored the two handguns on the floor under a shelf in her bedroom.

When Blessing was asked what she thinks should happen to her, she replied she should be "put to sleep" as a result of her actions.

"This is definitely an odd one," MCSO Sgt. Bryant Vanegas told Arizona's Family. "There's a lot of circumstances surrounding it, of course, but it's definitely something you don't see every day and it's very unfortunate that this took place."

"It is always concerning when domestic issues escalate to violence or tragic outcomes," Sheriff Paul Penzone said in a statement. "They are often isolated and neither predictable nor preventable."

According to court documents, there was a history of domestic violence between Blessing and Thomas, including at least one incident in which police responded.

Blessing is still in jail, held on a $500,000 cash bond.

Clearly her son was going through a "rebellious phase".

Jokes aside though, let her die in jail I say.

I saw it in the news, but immediately recognized that it does not fit the purpose of this thread.

In case I was mistaken, please explain how that is an example of self defense with a gun?

Seems to me it is an example of murder, not self defense.

Oh, wait, perhaps you were being tongue-in-cheek by stretching the definition of "self defense" for humorous effect?

That is, though, a case where the absence of a gun probably would have prevented a murder. I can't see the old broad bludgeoning her son with a rock.

Another example of self defense with a gun:

George Webb employee seriously injured after attack from man who went behind counter [VIDEO]
Jul 6, 2018

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are looking for the man who went behind the counter of a south side George Webb Restaurant and punched an employee in the face.

. . . Near the end of the video, a George Webb co-worker is seen pointing a gun at the suspect to get him away from the victim.

. . . According to the Alderman Donovan, that employee had a concealed carry permit for the firearm – was successful in getting the suspect to leave the premises.

“One can only imagine what might have occurred if that employee had not pulled out her weapon,” the alderman said.

There's a short video which shows how it went down. The employee with the gun shows remarkable restraint in not shooting the bad guy.

Threat stopped without anyone getting killed.

This is why guns are effective for self defense, and proves once again that the primary purpose is not necessarily to kill, but to persuade the bad guy to stop attacking.

I'll wager that the bad guy would not have initiated the attack had he known ahead of time that at least one of the employees was armed. Once word gets out that such attacks are very risky for the bad guys, perhaps this kind of attack will decline. Studies show that most criminals prefer their victims to be unarmed and will avoid victims they know are armed. It seems most liberals would also prefer the victims to be unarmed. Sad.

Honerable mention: Pistol-packing waitress defends George Webb co-worker during attack

A waitress with a concealed carry permit defended her co-worker after an irate customer went behind the counter and punched her, newly released video reveals.

The attack at George Webb restaurant in Milwaukee on June 28 could have been much worse, according to Alderman Bob Donovan, who made the footage public.

“I thank God the other waitress had a concealed carry weapon, has a permit... I shudder to think, had she not been there and had she not had this weapon, what this guy might have done," Donovan told Fox 6.

The suspect, who is a regular at the restaurant and reportedly had been cursing at his server throughout the night for taking too long with his order, came behind the counter and punched her in the face.

Within seconds, the woman’s colleague pulled out a handgun from her waistband and pointed at him until he backed off.

No one was shot, but the threat of being shot definitely chilled this wanna-be perpetrator out.
Edited, if you watch the video, he appeared to hit the other waitress fairly hard.
Ergo, no longer a "wanna-be," he should be charged for that.
Then Skank Of America could start in...

Police said an impaired Maryville man who pulled a gun on an 80-year-old family member Tuesday night ended up on the ground in his own urine when the elder man grabbed the firearm and pistol-whipped him in the back of the head.

...

Officers said they entered the home to find the victim, an 80-year-old family member of Covington’s, standing in the kitchen. It’s also where Covington was lying face down in the floor in his own urine, police said.

The older man said Covington drank six 24-ounce beers throughout the day and was extremely impaired. The man said Covington approached him with what he believed to be a BB gun and when he berated Covington for this behavior, Covington told him, “I’m going to f- — you up.”

Covington allegedly racked the gun, which loaded a round into the chamber, and the alleged victim realized it was a lethal firearm. The older man said he walked to the kitchen and called 911, but Covington grabbed the phone while he was talking to dispatchers.

The older man said he was able to get the loaded gun out of Covington’s hand and used it to strike him twice in the back of the head, immobilizing him.

Dispatchers were able to confirm Covington was a convicted felon not entitled to possess a firearm, the report states. The gun, a 9 mm Glock, was taken as evidence, along with a 15-round magazine and 14 9 mm bullets.

While the outcome was good this story makes me cringe because she left her young children in a car with an unsecured firearm. This could have just as easily been a "child finds gun and shoots sibling" story. She should have had the gun on her person.

For some of us, The Washington Post  is behind a paywall, so here's an alternate link to what appears to be the same story from WaPo:

Oklahomans kill an active shooter, but it's not as simple as it sounds

I too don't want to appear to be cherry picking, so I will assume people here are fully capable of determining your own highlights and takeaways.
