Do they really believe that shit?

Post by ed » Tue Sep 05, 2017 5:05 pm

Ages ago I was sitting with a bud in a bar in midtown. He made an observation that the Pope didn't buy into all the mystical crap, that he was running a multinational and he was too smart and too aware.

And it made me wonder, still does. Do pastors and priests and the guys at the top of these religions really believe the magical stuff? In their heart of hearts? Impossible to know but I somehow doubt it.

Some probably do, some probably don't. Hard to say what the proportion is, though.

Toward the end of the time I was a Mormon, there was a period when I came to the conclusion that I wasn't really buying it, but I really WANTED to buy it so I managed to convince myself to play along, thinking the doubt would go away sooner or later. I suspect a lot of them hit that stage and are more successful than me at staying there

I think Marjoe answered that question a while ago.

There's the classical:
Testament of Jean Meslier

Jean Meslier (1664-1729) served as a Catholic priest for 40 years, but after his death was discovered to have written the very first book-length philosophical essay promoting atheism.

Remarkable for its era, his 633-page Testament shows us that Jean Meslier “invented a radical atheism, proposed a hedonist ethic, formulated an immanent ontology, constructed his libertarian politics and gave them a communalist and internationalist concept, thought of a feminism of action, anticipated the battle against speciesism, erected modern materialism, unmasked the Cartesian deceit, sketched the revolutionary concept of 1789, [and] called for the necessity of intellectual critics.”1

Angry, precise, logical, and eminently quotable, the Testament of Jean Meslier is a revelation that came centuries before the world was ready for it. It is the ultimate New Atheist book of 1729.

Then he went on to co-star with David Hasselhoff in Starcrash and eventually to be mocked by aguys and a two robots.

The man's life formed a really, really weird arc.

Weird, but I think it makes sense. Marjoe is a performer so he went into an industry where one can perform without being a conman.

An excerpt from one of Hitchens' books:

Overall, I agree with Nyar. Some may believe, some probably don't. I think it is very likely that Joseph Smith was a con-man, pure and simple, who figured out that the best con it to start a new religion.
