It is "real" news in so far as there are lots of people whose behavior might be affected.

Would those "lots of people" have even known about it had Fox not chosen to report on it?
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

I have no idea, but I suspect that Fox was following the lead of there already being a lot of buzz about it in certain communities.

Fox didn't actually give it credence did they?

Or did they?

Sure they did. Look at the article, it's not very long.

The fact that they published an article about it at all also arguably lends some credence, but I'm not even talking about that. Sure, they added a throwaway line that "NASA repeatedly has said Planet X is a hoax" but most of the article just repeats the claims without any judgment or attempt to apply critical thinking to the claims. The one critic who is quoted seems to be a rapture believer, who is only skeptical about using numerology to predict the date of the rapture.
