I've been waiting for this

Post by whitefork » Thu May 09, 2013 1:08 pm

maybe I to get more of a life but checkers is what we play on Planet X. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1733527/
It appears to be available on Amazon. I'll check it out this evening if I get a chance.

eta. It's good. Lubabalo Kondlo has a remarkable story, coming out of east nowhere South Africa. 2 black guys playing English draughts for the world championship is one of those things nobody would have predicted.
http://www.dailyspeculations.com/wordpress/?p=4984
African players mostly use the 100-square board (Baba Sy as a sample of 1 for instance http://www.thechessdrum.net/newsbriefs/ ... abaSy.html) and American black players are almost all 100-square (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_draughts) or Pool checkers players (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pool_checkers and http://www.nytimes.com/1991/12/07/nyreg ... board.html). I think in 40 years I've played exactly one black player in a tournament and he gets some screen time here. "Hey, I know that guy!" I don't think it's that the environment is racist, more like self-segregating. There's a sociology paper waiting to be written on the racial division of the game in the US. The Russian players have made the bridge, which was kind of strange when they first showed up here and started winning Pool tournaments. (Iser Kuperman and Vladimir Kaplan for instance)
If it's good enough for Nelson, it's quite good enough for me.

Searching for Bobby Fischer has actors and is slightly fictionalized for dramatic effect. This is pretty much a straight documentary.

I have not a clue what it is, I just know AA sees the command economy boogie man in intellectual property, real climate science, and anything involving women, so I reckon all we need to do is allude to its existence.

Even considering it as part of your usual strawperson BS, I don't get what you're alluding to.

Or do you think I think women hang on the wall and whistle?

Now that we know it's possible to play a perfect game, it's about as pointless as tic-tac-toe. :P

the proof that a draw is assured with best play does not exhaust the possibilities of the game.
and the we who knows the draw exists is not the we who can produce that draw over the board.

Because the former stay in their parents' basements?

I still occasionally lose or draw at the Connect-5 game in the middle of Machinarium, though most of the time I set up double jeopardy within the first six moves.

Not familiar with connect-5 and I really don't need another game to add to the time toilet at this time.

Play on a 10x10 board.
Add checkers in alternating turns. Once placed, checkers cannot be moved. Winner is first to get 5 in a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.

Some parts of the strategy are straightforward. If you have 4 in a row with empty spaces on both ends and your opponent doesn't win with the next piece,
you win. If your opponent has 3 in a row and is one step away from making 4 in a row with empty spaces on both ends, you must block one or the other end.
By carefully laying out a bunch of pieces in a checkerboard pattern, you can create a bunch of diagonal 3-in-a-rows and force your opponent to spend turns blocking those, leaving you free to make a single move which makes 3 or 4 in a row horizontally and 3 or 4 in a row vertically--a double jeopardy.
The edges constrain the lengths of possible chains, so play tends to initially focus on the center of the board.

That sounds like Go-moku or Pente (I think that was Go-moku with a rule change to make it proprietary). I think the board was a lot larger through.

Ideally infinite.

Use large graph paper, not a "board". 8)

Interesting, it looks like the first player may have a forced win on any size board.
