Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.

Gigapixel photo of Everest

If you zoom in far enough in the right places you can see climbers too.

Holy crap there are a fuckload of tents at base camp, which is huge.

There's climbers further up the mountain too.

Amazing.

If this technology continues to advance, we should be able to zoom in on the dead bodies near the top. 8)

Mount Everest...Street View. The terminology is inadvertently humorous.

That gigapixel photo of Everest link doesn't seem to work anymore. Too bad. It was pretty awesome.

I did find this video though:

Everest claims 16 more lives in the biggest single disaster on the mountain ever:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/worl ... w/7902577/
KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Search teams recovered a 13th body Saturday from the snow and ice covering a dangerous climbing pass on Mount Everest, where an avalanche a day earlier swept over a group of Sherpa guides in the deadliest disaster on the world's highest peak.

Another three guides remained missing, and searchers were working quickly to find them in case weather conditions deteriorated, said Maddhu Sunan Burlakoti, head of the Nepalese government's mountaineering department. But the painstaking effort involved testing the strength of newly fallen snow and using extra ropes, clamps and aluminum ladders to navigate the unstable field.

The avalanche barreled down a narrow climbing pass known as the "popcorn field" for its bulging chunks of ice at about 6:30 a.m. Friday. The group of about 25 Sherpa guides were the first people making their way up this climbing season to dig paths and fix ropes for their foreign clients to use in attempting to reach the summit next month.

There has been a disturbing increase in the number of people who want to climb Mt. Everest. I heard recently that you literally have to wait in line to start the climb.

It wouldn't surprise me if someday soon you hear about a suicide cult that deliberately climbs Everest to die. Think about it. Your body will be frozen in place for all to see for centuries. You could die while flipping off the world and remain that way forever.

Image
Just don't die while in a position where you look like you were jerking off.

Or wear something so stupid that people forget your name and call you green boots. Seriously, type in green boots in google and it will take you straight to a wiki page about this guy.

Everest continues to claim lives. Here's the latest situation:

Some 30 climbers frostbitten or sick on Everest after 2 die

I'm guessing that what happens is that things tend to be OK when the weather is a high pressure system, but just like anywhere else, the air pressure can go up and down depending on the weather. Low pressure from the weather combined with the already low pressure due to the altitude makes it especially deadly. 18 died last year, 17 the year before. So it ain't getting much safer.

I think that the government ought to step in. There is no "need" to climb Everest. All that is happening is that wealthy members of the patriarchy spend money that would be better spent on the needs of the other 99% and that once they get into trouble, which they inevitably do, require vast expenditures to get them out of said trouble.

I think that the President should put together a committee to study the problem.

Really, ed? That's what we need? Another government bureaucracy?

How about we employ one of our existing government agencies? We have a huge mess of them. Pick an acronym. CIA, FBI, DHS, ATF, FDA, DEA, EPA, in fact, here's a list.

It doesn't even have to be a federal agency. We have tons of state agencies. How about the Rhode Island DOT? They had a budget of 2 billion dollars last year, and only 200 million was accounted for. Where did the rest of the money go? Who knows. I just know that I haven't seen a road repair since the last time we had a flood and FEMA was requested. All the sudden, dire road and overpass repairs were made all over the state, then nothing. Money must have dried up. Same thing happened a few years before that when FEMA was called in after a hurricane. What are all those RI-DOT employees doing in between FEMA waves? They're not fixing the road I live on, I'll tell ya that!

Hello, Mrs. Rockefeller? This is agent Vance, Rhode Island DOT. I need to ask you a few questions about your son. He's planning a trip to Mt. Everest, is that correct? Is that really necessary? Mrs. Rockefeller, if your son is feeling a need to go out into the world and make a difference, may I make a suggestion? There's a certain grouchy individual in Rhode Island that needs his road re-paved........
